Four Reasons to Rediscover the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction

Published: Thursday, March 29th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

The golden age of pulp fiction is the time period that authors wrote for the cheap pulp paper magazines between the 1920s to the 1950s. Instead of the slick glossy more expensive magazines that some could not afford, the pulps were made of a high acid paper that was disposable. You read the magazines, shared it with your family and friends, or just threw it away when you were done.

Here are some reasons I would recommend reacquainting yourself with these stories. If you are new to pulp fiction stories, the same reasons should still apply:

1. Some of our most beloved writers and stories came out of this era, writers such as Edgar Rice Burroughs who is most famously known for his character; “Tarzan”, Johnston McCulley who created the character “Zorro”, Agatha Christie and her famous series of Mystery stories, Issac Asimov’s “The Foundation Series” and L. Ron Hubbard who wrote in all genres during that period. There are many more but you get the idea. There are so many stories from this era that old timers who loved these stories can reminisce and reacquaint themselves with it or the next generation can read the originals that the pulp fiction era was so famous for.

2. These were mass market magazines that literally covered all genres so that readers could enjoy their favorite style of writing or check out something different. They were cheap so it was easy to obtain. The genres included fantasy, science fiction, westerns, romance, mystery, hard boiled detective, spicy detective, air and sea adventures, far flung adventure, tales from the orient etc. Today, through the internet, libraries, bookstores etc., these stories can be easily found.

3. The golden age of pulp fiction was the era that gave us the super hero! Ah… the super hero! Some of the most famous of the super heroes were Spider-man, Superman, Batman, The Phantom, The Shadow, Hercules etc. Most people would say they remember these characters from the comics, and they did! However, the precursor to the comic book was pulp fiction. Many of these characters had evolved through this period to what we know of them today in television and movies. If you read the pulp version of the super hero, you really get the foundation of these characters and you get to see how these characters have changed and how they have also remained the same. It’s like reading a bit of history or back tracking a genealogy that gives you a clearer picture of the whole scene.

4. So prolific and influential were some of these writers that they have literally changed the way we write and what we read today. It truly was the launching pad of some of the most creative literary works we are luck enough to be able to avail ourselves of.

There is a renaissance happening with these stories and it’s a good time to experience these classic novels and stories. Many of them are also coming out in audiobook form as well for those who prefer stories to listen to them. Enjoy!

From Lucky To Legendary – Jim Dale’s Reading Of The 7 Harry Potter Audio Books

Published: Saturday, March 17th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

People dozens of years from now are going to recognize Jim Dale’s rich baritone voice. At seventy-five, Mr. Dale is the narrating voice of Harry Potter and over two-hundred different character voices in the Harry Potter audio books.

What most people do not realize though is the fact that Dale has been in entertainment far before he began working on the Potter audiobooks. Jim was a pop singer, a stand-up comic, an off-broadway performer, and more in the entertainment industry for just about over 50 years before he discovered the Harry Potter audiobooks… or more like, before the Harry Potter publishers found him.

In ’99, Listening Library (at the time an independent publisher) had just obtained the copyright (in the USA) to the audio book for The Sorcerer’s Stone (book 1) for only fifteen-thousand dollars. Timothy Ditlow, a son of the founders of Listening Library, was attending a small party with several broadway frequenters and a few of them thought Jim would be good for the part. And although Dale had only recorded 1 audiobook previously, he decided to offer him the part. Rowling and the producers had always been clear that they wanted a british accent for Harry on the audiobooks and that combined with Jim’s performing experiences fit the bill.

Jim says that when he was first offered the part he had never heard of Harry Potter and asked to read the book. After having read it he says that he was “completely immersed in the Harry Potter World” and recognizing that the book was incredibly well-written, witty, and that there was a prospect of 6 more books really “whetted my appetite.”

When Jim was recording the books he was usually the 1st or 2nd person after Rowling’s publisher to read one of the new books (and almost always the first person in the United states to do so). Quite the gift and the curse, since Dale was required by his contract to not expose even the smallest storyline particulars before the book was released.

Now since narrating all seven audio books, Dale has received 2 Grammys, seven Grammy nominations, a record ten Audie awards (including audio book of the year 2004), and thirteen Audio File Earphone awards for his performances. Dale is also the voice for many of the Harry Potter video games and a lot of the commentary in the Potter DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Pulp Fiction Style

Published: Saturday, March 10th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

Meet “Fanner Marston” a petty thief who as an adult masters his own craft but goes completely mad! With his vicious greed and slavering lust for power, he alone of 40 men survives a blistering trek through the desert to find the magical city of Parva. Legend has it a great secret awaits that could give him absolute control over the universe. However, the key to all power is not what he expected!

This classic story was written by author L. Ron Hubbard in 1943 in the pulp fiction magazine “Science Fiction Stories. He along with other great writers such as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Lester Dent, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein and many others, were pioneers in their field in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, far flung adventures and more.

The era of the pulps is unique for at least two reasons; a) it was a time of the great depression where people were very much in need of something that could take them on adventures they would not otherwise experience and b) discoveries in science and physics were expanding at a rapid rate giving the creative minds of writers a whole new genre of fantastic futuristic and wildly colorful characters to entertain their readers with. There was so much new material to work with that the above mentioned writers led the way in how to get the job done influencing future budding writers.

The pulp fiction era that lasted up to the early 1950s produced characters such as “Tarzan of the Apes, the space adventures of Buck Rogers, Conan the Barbarian and the Avengers.” When Hollywood was in full swing, these pulp fiction classics were the ideal stories to put up on the big screen immortalizing these characters forever.

Pulp fiction writers who created space stories and characters were a unique breed of writers due to the fact that space travel did not occur until the 1960s. The idea of space travel up until then was there, but it was just that, an idea! It takes a creative mind indeed to develop an entire story with believable characters and situations and completely capture the imagination of the reader. Cosmic adventure at its best!

Fantasy is somewhat of a different animal than science fiction in that science fiction has some element of a believable truth, it is in the realm of possibility where as in fantasy, anything goes. Fantasy can encompass space fiction, but for the most part it has wildly unique characters such as fairies, elves, trolls, swamp creatures and such.

Life today moves at a much faster pace. Many are hard pressed to squeeze reading a book into their busy schedules. For those in that situation, they are in luck! Audio books have been experiencing a rebirth and many of these classic science fiction/fantasy stories are now making its way to back the general public. Whether on a cd, mp3 player or even an ipod, these classic stories are worth experiencing not only for the pulp fiction generation but our newest generation.

The Joys of "Listening" to Books

Published: Saturday, January 28th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

While I have had an iPod for a year or two and have spent many hours travelling to work and doing household tasks while listening to an FM radio or iPod, I had never listened to an audio book until last week. Looking back, I think the reason why I hadn’t bought an audio book… I’d often thought of it when visiting book shops, was the cost. CD-based audio books are relatively expensive (In Australia at least).

Recently, when I bought an interest in an online audio book business, I decided that I needed to try the products so that I’d become authoritative about audio books and also have a complete understanding of what customers would go through while visiting my site, selecting audio books, paying by credit card and then downloading from their libraries.

I’ve always been a prolific reader, but haven’t read a novel for ages. Most of my reading is technical across a range of subjects. So, thinking I needed a change, I decided to download two audio books from my site that were completely different from the stuff I usually read. I selected a title called, “Wonderful Ways to Love a Grandchild” and “Belle De Jour: The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl”. Quite a wide apart selection I thought.

I downloaded the first title onto my computer and began listening to it while sitting working at my computer. Surprisingly, I found that I was able to think about what I was doing (writing sales materials) and follow the story. The reader, a woman with an American accent spoke pleasantly and the theme was much broader than just loving one’s grandchild. The speaker spoke about such things as not trying to take over juvenile grandchildren’s lives, accepting grandchildren’s differences. It wasn’t simply a list of ways to love one’s grandchildren… grandson in my case as I expected. You know the stuff: “Tip 106: Always give your grand child a hug when you see him or her.”

My grandson was five last November and begins school this month (Jan 07). We are the best of friends, having spent almost every day of our lives together for the first three years of his life. Now I have a few ideas about how we can build our relationship hopefully through the next 20 years should I last that long. It was a pleasant experience listening to the reader and it got even better with my next title.

The author of “Belle De Jour” speaks with a lovely English accent, sounds youngish and is able to use humour, seriousness, surprise and other emotions at the right time to make the title special. As we had visitors staying with us at the time, I decided it would be more discreet… given the topic, to listen from my audio player/recorder. And that I did.

As I lay next to my wife in bed I plugged in the player and began listening to part one. Not having read previous titles about the sex trade, I didn’t know what to expect; would it be a smut and foul language filled title with a lot of huffing, puffing and bucket loads of ejaculate as it’s author bonked her way through hundreds of clients a week, or something less pornographic?

“Belle De Jour” is a tasteful presentation of the memoirs of a London call girl with only a few uses of the f-word on those occasions when it adds to the verve of the narrative. There are no surprises. If anything, it reveals the human side of those women who make a career choice to sell sex for a living and some of the different types of behaviour her clients exhibit.

I enjoyed both the topic and the way in which I “read” it. On a couple of occasions I relaxed on a sofa with my eyes closed and listened to the storyteller. Her voice was very relaxing and it seemed at times like a form of therapy. It is much easier to listen to a story than to read it, focus on the pages, keep your eyes open, ensure there is sufficient light and that the page doesn’t shut and you lose your place. It’s also a great way to multi-task as you travel to work, walk, wash dishes, do the gardening or anything else conducive to personal time to listen.

Audio books are an excellent way to hear others’ stories, learn a language, sit and relax and let the world go by or to multi-task so you make the most of whatever time you have. This won’t be the last audio book to which I listen. Now that I have tried it, I’m very impressed and will surely find something else to listen to on my site which has 5,000 titles.

Children’s Books – Helping Young Readers Through the Struggle

Published: Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

Young readers who are just beginning to read have so much to learn and to some of them it can be overwhelming! In the midst of learning all those sounds and blends and slurs comprehension can easily get lost. Many young readers struggle through learning the words and don’t get the story of what they are reading. When this happens their imagination is left behind and reading is no fun!

Although the struggle must be made and reading must be learned the fun and imagination shouldn’t be left out. I would suggest and recommend audio books for our young readers, and those who have extra struggles with learning to read, not as a crutch but as a way to help them enjoy the experience of reading a book and gain more skills in comprehension. If they learn to enjoy reading their imagination will begin to encourage them to know what they are reading and not just read the words to be done with the unpleasant thing they are not enjoying.

Here is a list of some great books for young readers to listen to all of which are on audio:

• The Cat in the Hat (and most of the other Dr. Seuss books)

• Winnie the Pooh

• The Little Engine That Could

• The Magic School Bus

• Where the Wild Things Are

• Clifford the Big Red Dog

• The Berenstain Bears

• Curious George

There are many more to choose from, just find out what your young reader is interested in and go!

Audio books are not hard to find you can purchase them in compact disk version or download them from an internet website or find them in your local library. They are usually read in a dramatized way which can help the listener to really absorb the story and enjoy the journey they are making into the world of literature. Some of the books are read sort of like plays with many different actors portraying the different characters in the book, some are read by only one actor, either way they are all very enjoyable.

As a writer I want my books and stories to be enjoyed by all who read them not to be something that is a burden or an awful pain to bear so as I said the struggle must be made but it shouldn’t be all hard work there should be excitement, joy, thrills and a real love of literature instilled in our young readers so they can look forward to reading and never look upon it as something to dread.
