Erotica: Or How Kindle Made Reading Sexy Again

Published: Saturday, March 10th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

The Kindle redefined the eBook and along the way, gave books a new lease of life. No longer do tatty old paperbacks clutter your house, a library of 8,000 books can fit in your hand, and suddenly reading is cool and very sexy.

One genre in particular has seen an enormous rise in popularity: Erotica.

It may be that after YA fantasy like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings et al, it’s the turn of grown up adult fantasy to take centre stage, but I’ve got my own theories on why erotica has grown in popularity with Kindle sales. Mainly, with one click you could be reading about the naughtiest naughties ever and no one will ever know. You no longer have to go into a ‘specialist book shop’ and browse with flaming cheeks until you find erotica that’s steamy but not downright porn, you don’t have to make certain the books are hidden from view when the vicar comes for tea, you can even read about masterful masters and submissive slaves on the train, in the dentist’s waiting room, and if you’re unexpectedly disturbed, with a click of a button, there’s an image of Jules Verne or Emily Bronte on screen and your Kindle will never tell what you’ve been up to!

When Amazon announced the Kindle, they also ushered in a new era of indie publishing. Writers, good writers who’d endlessly submitted their precious manuscript to agents and publishers only to hear the ‘Catch 22′ remark -” sorry – we don’t represent unpublished authors.” unexpectedly had an amazing opportunity to self publish. Suddenly it’s all change and the boot’s on the other foot. Indie authors don’t need publishing houses, or agents. Since most indie-authors only want the chance to put their work before an audience their books are absolute bargains for Kindle readers searching for original fresh writing.

As one of those writers desperately seeking an audience, I applaud Amazon’s foresight in allowing individuals the chance to compete on an even playing field. You can be sure I’m eternally grateful at this opportunity to play with the big kids: I make certain to follow the rules, play nice, and above all entertain! Hopefully anyone who takes time to download a sample of my tales will agree.

Of course, with the good comes the bad, and the delusional. Some indie-authors seem to have keyboard diarrhoea. They’re in love with their own writing leaving the reader far behind and wondering just who lost the plot.

Fortunately, you try before you buy. Amazon and most eBook sites allow sampling first. So you can download the first 20 – 30% of a promising looking unknown to reassure yourself that the author doesn’t just write a good blurb. Can you imagine standing in the middle of Waterstones, or WH Smiths and flicking through the naughty books?

We all need a little escapism now and then. There are times when we could all do with a little spice in our lives.

That’s where erotica comes in, and there’s never been a better place to read it than on your Kindle.

Audio Books – How Busy People Read on the Go.

Published: Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

Reading has always been encouraged as a learning tool by parents and teachers around the world.
There is so much information in books, and not just in factual ones. Reading your favorite novel can still give you information on how people interact or what a certain city overseas is like. Every time you read something, even the newspaper, you are taking in information and the more information you take in the more knowledgeable you become on a broad range of topics.

Unfortunately, reading as a pastime is becoming less and less common.
People are just far too busy to spend an hour or so sitting or lying around reading a book. We tend to read only what we have to for work or school and leave the “entertainment reading” aside.

However, with technology expanding at the rate it is, there is now a way to continue enjoying books without taking up any of your time.

They are called AUDIO BOOKS or E-BOOKS.

Audio books can be downloaded from one of thousands of websites and played from your cd player, mp3 player or Ipod, or from your computer.

This means that the options for where you can “read” is just about endless.
“Read” while walking the dog, or doing housework or on your daily commute to work. These are all activities that are done daily that now can be even more productive.

Everyday more and more titles are being added to the list of available audio books.
You will find audio books on topics such as history, self help guides and autobiographies as well as novels on everything from romance to thrillers to humour. The list is endless.

So if you have forgotten the joy of reading, start searching out your favorite titles online and catch up on the reading you have been missing out on.

My favorite site for audio books is because they have over 5000 titles to choose from and more being added every day. There is no membership to sign up for or monthly fee and there is no software to download, crowding up your hard drive. You simply choose your title, pay a nominal fee for the book and download it to your computer. It is that easy. They even have a free title every month available to download so you can try the system out for free, so what are you waiting for? Give it a go today!

From Slavery To Salvation – The Story Of Samuel Ajayi Crowther

Published: Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

A gripping narrative of the slavery experience and freedom of Samuel Ajayi Crowther given by Crowther himself.

It narrates the true story of the ordeal of a young West African boy whose village was raided by slave raiders, his painful separation from his family and subsequent experience as a slave to different masters.

This very rare firsthand account of such a terrible experience never fails to leave readers shaken at the effect of slavery on the human mind.

The most amazing thing about this book is that it takes us back to the Dark Era of slavery in Africa and makes the reader see through the eyes of the young boy and almost relive his several experiences including the loss of his father, the very traumatic separation from his mother and siblings, which may move you to tears, his voyage on a Portuguese slave ship, his failed attempt at suicide, and his first sighting of a white man.

He also narrates his fortunate release to freedom from the Portuguese slave traders by a British Royal Navy Ship. He was taken to Sierra Leone where he joined the Christian Missionary Society who cared for him and taught him the English language.

He later went to school in England, came back to Sierra Leone and later became the first African Anglican bishop in Nigeria.

This is such a fantastic and entertaining story that you wont stop reading until the last page. Full of suspense, trauma and a little humor. You just have to read this!

Day Job Killer – Say Goodbye To The 9 To 5? Check My Review

Published: Friday, January 13th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

If you know anything about affiliate marketing, then you know it’s tough. Not only that but it’s an industry that’s constantly in flux. What works one day may not work the next. If you’re going to succeed in that business then you need to stay on top of the latest trends. Back in October there was an eBook released that helped you to do just that. It was called Affiliate Project X. In it’s first week it broke an all time sales record and continued racking up the sales ever since. Well the author of APX has released a new product called Day Job Killer.

The Day Job Killer is authored by the same guy who wrote Adwords Miracle and Affiliate Project X, which broke the Clickbank record for sales when it was released last October (selling over 6,000 copies in just 1 week). Obviously Chris, the author knows what he’s talking about. This guy understands affiliate marketing inside out.

The ebook is less than 100 pages and is extremely easy to read. It has no fluff, no hype, no outdated textbook information that doesn’t work in the real world. The techniques are being used right now by a few savvy affiliates who are making a killing online. Chris lays out everything in such a way that makes it easy to understand and follow.

There are a few problems that I see with Day Job Killer, though. One of them is costs. Chris advocates using PPC programs for advertising, and these can add up tremendously. For the affiliate marketer who is just starting out, they usually don’t have a lot of money to spend on advertising. Although Chris’s techniques help you to minimize costs, there are still costs nonetheless, and this may turn some people off to the book.

He does offer alternative techniques, however, that are free. Unfortunately these techniques fall into the realm of a little far fetched and difficult to implement. Though I imagine that if you were able to pull them off, they could be very effective.

There are a ton of products out there that promise you overnight riches. Some of them actually contain some useful information, but most don’t. If you want to try and separate the wheat from the chaff, then you have to do your research. In the dog eat dog world, everyone is trying to do anything they can to make a buck because every little bit counts. Don’t believe all the hype from most of these products. Use review sites and do your research so that you don’t wind up spending more money than you have to. Day Job Killer is a good product that may be worth it to you if you have some cash to throw around. Do your research before buying, though, as this one is not for everyone.

The White Tiger By Aravind Adiga

Published: Thursday, January 12th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

The White Tiger is Balram Halwai, a young Indian who has grown up in the kind of poverty that many of us the west find difficult to comprehend. A country where two worlds collide – the village and ghetto existence of the majority which is bleak and desolate juxtaposed with the modern, dynamic life of the fortunate few in the big city with foreign multinationals in modern glass fronted office blocks, shopping malls, fancy restaurants and 5 star hotels.

Like many of his fellow countrymen, Balram’s future life is set from birth to be one of servitude and poverty. However, Balram is a dreamer who dares to believe his life can be different; observing how many people’s lives are governed by invisible barriers he contrives of ways to break free.

Taken out of school to work as a shop boy he gets a lucky break when offered the position of personal chauffeur to the son of local wealthy landlord Mr Ashhok. Balram’s master is different from the average landlord, a wealthy man yes, but also considerate to his faithful employee. However, Balram is forced to reassess his position when asked to carry the can after his master’s wife, Pinky, accidentally knocks down and kills a young street urchin during a drunken escapade that our subject has little control over.

Balram doesn’t want to spend the rest of his days at the mercy of his employer and starts to think how easy it would be to kill him and start a new life for himself. The prospect of being caught in the act and the possibility of revenge against his family deters Balram from carrying out his plan – but eventually the perfect opportunity presents and it is one that is almost too good to let pass.

The story ends with Balram in his new role as a successful businessman in the big city with his own employees and his own moral standards. Balram has observed how the system works and is perfectly willing to use it to his own ends.

The White Tiger won the Man Booker prize in 2008 and has been acclaimed for its literary merit. Whether this is justified is arguable, the story is well told yes but I found it difficult to stay interested. There is always a promise in the narrative that something spectacular is about to happen, which it eventually does, but it is certainly a long time coming.

Personally I found the story to be drawn out and I gradually lost sympathy for the subject, Balram. An unfortunate character he certainly was to be born into a time and a place where ones future is cast from the outset; but once his outcome took a different turn it was apparent that he was as cold and calculating, in many ways, as were his former masters.

However, perhaps I do the writer a disservice here as it’s possible we are not meant to sympathise with Balram, only to recognise that deep down we are all the same, just that the circumstances we are born into have more to do with our destiny than we care to acknowledge?

Overall, The White Tiger is easy to read and a fairly enjoyable story. Perhaps the point of the book is not just a study of human character but a look at a country that we think we know but don’t. Possibly the next time you have the misfortune to be connected to a remote call centre in Bangalore you might have a little more sympathy for the person at the other end of the line or at least have some understanding of his or her everyday life?

A Review of the Ebook Child Safety Online

Published: Sunday, January 8th, 2012 | Posted in Free Books

The advent of the Internet added new dimensions to the lives of computer users, many of them good, but as with a lot of things in life there is a downside. Many thousands of adults get caught out by online scammers and as we expect children to be more gullible than adults they need protecting from predators, making child safety online absolutely essential.

Protecting our children is mainly common sense, but for those who are new to the Internet it can be baffling without knowing what to watch out for and how to deal with problems. Before I review the ebook I’ll tell you about my friend and her daughter.

Five years ago my friend’s 12 year old daughter was groomed by an online predator and my friend had no idea what was happening until it was too late. She thought that her daughters growing behavioural problems were down to the transition from childhood to becoming a teenager – those difficult years. My friend didn’t know that she was using school and a friends computer to go online and visit chat rooms. That her daughter lost her childhood to a monster more than twice her age who she met in a chat room.

My friend fought back and was even instrumental in getting the law changed to help protect children more. It took a long time and a lot of pain and sorrow for all of the family before things got back to anything like normal. Although things are much better now the harrowing events of 5 years ago have tainted their lives and that can never be altered.

Whats In The Ebook

In Child Safety Online there are detailed tips of what parents should watch out for and how to deal with any potential problems from perverts. Apart from online predators there are other dangers which include pornographic websites, bullying, gambling and online games that are not suitable for children.

In this ebook you learn about two types of Child Internet Protection Software and how to use them. Also step by step instructions are given on how to find out what sites your children have visited and how to block them from accessing any danger sites. There are even sections on identity theft, spyware and malware and how to avoid and deal with the problems.

What I Think About It

Child Safety Online is well written and I felt that it explored potential problems and the warning signs to watch out for in children thoroughly. The ebook is full of excellent advice, in fact much better than I expected. To me the only downside was that parents could easily find themselves getting paranoid whilst reading the warning signs, but it’s a sad fact that sickos on the internet are a real threat and a little paranoia is less harmful than online predators who try to catch children at an impressionable age with the intent to do irreparable damage to those precious lives.

If you are worried about online threats to your children then I can recommend ‘Child Safety Online’ as a source of good information and advice.

Interview With Author John Reyer Afamasaga Regarding His Emotional Techno Fiction

Published: Sunday, December 11th, 2011 | Posted in Free Books

etfiction: Emotional Techno Fiction was conceptualized by John Reyer Afamasaga in 2001, a novice free-eBook-author, who believed that he has to synthetically create his work, due to his lack of ability, experience and finesse as a writer.

A number of slants are presented by etfiction as to the relevance of its roots being steeped in music, rather than just literature.

He takes the word Techno, in two senses. First, in relating to the style and type of music DJs produced from sampling other peoples’ recordings. Second, relating its technical connotations, referencing the DJ and their approach to creating their music, because of their use of turntables and samplers in the place of instruments.

etfiction is a story telling technique, which takes its development and deployment method, in principle, from the way DJs create their dance tracks.

In 2007, the novice looks to attract the attention of publishing houses, in his aim to get the free online eBook publisher etfiction’s books into the most classic of editions – print.

Heather: Afamasaga, aside from the principles and theoretical stuff, what’s the practical application of DJing to writing books? If at all there are any?

Afamasaga: Simile, techno, technique. The rig, turntables, PC, Apple Mac, Laptop or media playing device is the pen. The record, disc, audio or digital file is the same as an authors’ ink. The mixed track is the idea. The feeling from the crowd makes emotion. The experience is often as surreal as fiction.

Heather: So this is your method of writing?

Afamasaga: It’s a development process. I am conscious of it when I write; its part of that security blanket we find in having created our own way of writing, because I used to get so much flak about the way I wrote. I decided no one can tell me that it’s wrong, clumsy or lousy, as it is my genre. Of course there are the universal groupings that all written communication come under, is it “rubbish” or is it “worth reading”?

I always say to myself before I sit down at the keyboard: “The ‘Impassioned’ DJ is about to perform his ‘Plausible’, yet still ‘Colorful’ set.”

Heather: Go on…

Afamasaga: Impassioned – etfiction relies on fuel; inspiration, the power of some passion. The writer, prior to beginning the writing process, must be at the point where they have no choice but to perform their task of putting into words, what they instinctively know and now wholeheartedly believe. This may produce questionable reason and even challengeable facts due to the stream of consciousness that runs through the writer and out onto their pages of words.

Plausible – etfiction must, over a long passage, provide a concept, complete so as to stimulate conversation, that is Intertextually self fulfilling in both fact, according to the narrator, and acceptable in sensibility to the reader, making etfiction plausible.

Colorful – Similar to a DJ’s output, a record which may include many different samples from many genres, eras and styles, etfiction is at mercy of whims, tangents, and exaggerations by the Author, or Narrator, which are permissible as deemed necessary under the heading, Impassioned.

Heather: Your slogan is “A narrative from a Pacific Islander who speaks through an illiterate in America.” Is this a derogatory remark against the US?

Afamasaga: No, it’s not. It’s actually much simpler than that; it’s a compliment to my lead character John Lazoo. He can’t read or write, but it takes Lazoo to put this whole show together.

Heather: John Lazoo was your first book, after reading the second, WIPE, and then Illicit Blade of Grass, I often got the feeling that your were almost rambling, angry, almost like voices you often refer to. Were you hearing these voices?

Afamasaga: Of course, as did the characters Lazoo, John Page, Metofeaz, Le Mac, Polina. Yeah, I’ve always heard voices.

Heather: Did you ever seek help?

Afamasaga: What for? Actually I did, but I was told I can’t be schizophrenic, or I wouldn’t be able to differentiate between the voices outside and inside of my head. Maybe depressed, delusional, imbalanced and a bit paranoid, but who isn’t, ah?

Heather: Lazoo, Metofeaz, Le Mac, and Afamasaga, are they real?

Afamasaga: Of course they’re real. Lazoo is the Id, Metofeaz is the Ego, Afamasaga is the Super-Ego.

Heather: And Jon Le Mac?

Afamasaga: Jon Le Mac is everyman and his dog, that Lazoo refers to as MICE, he is actually, what bridges the divide between LMLA-ink and the markets. Everyone loves Le Mac and Le Mac loves everyone.

Heather: So Jon Le Mac is who I am interviewing?

Afamasaga: You’re interviewing me, which is when Lazoo and Afamasaga agree.

Heather: What happens when Lazoo and Afamasaga disagree?

Afamasaga: Then Metofeaz goes on a writing rampage, and Le Mac starts to carelessly mass market the work. Lazoo goes inside himself, Afamasaga vanishes and we just cross our fingers that Lazoo, or Afamasaga can save the day at the end of the carnival.

Heather: Your stuff is almost diary writing if you take out the settings and the character names.

Afamasaga: As is a lot of stuff by new authors or the stuff that one tends to feel most about, which causes them to first put pen to paper in a serial manner.

Heather: Are you worried about being considered brash as to suggest you have created a genre of your own?

Afamasaga: No one really knows or cares. If I get a job writing copy in a newspaper, I’d be happy. It was meant to be therapeutic, a career change, and a reinvention of myself.

Heather: You say that you lacked the ability, experience and finesse to write and this is the reason why you designed etfiction?

Afamasaga: The erection of the structure (etfiction) within which I felt safe and eventually comfortable that I could produce work was only part of the impetus required to achieve all that had to be found, sorted and presented. At this very time I was also going through huge emotional and personality changes, which I identified from having looked at Freud and then finally at Roberto Assagioli’s Psychosynthesis, an approach to psychology, which takes its origins from Psychoanalysis, but then announces that our growth requires spirituality to be distinctly acknowledged as a “hormonal vital” of our different layers to attain and sustain growth.

Heather: Hormonal Vital?

Afamasaga: It’s my little addition to the equation, showing my respect for Assagioli’s work. Freud was most definitely the pioneer who made the whole matter accessible, but for me and my religious upbringing, Roberto’s admission of the soul’s existence and its requirement of satisfaction in that Spirituality is fundamentally what really does set us aside from the linguistically confused animals. Oh, “Hormonal” in that, up till Roberto, the body of understanding was without soul, his addition was the regulator for me, and “vital” as to not clash with engrained Christianity, which I don’t really want to be seen selling, ok?

Furthermore, a part of Psychosynthesis that defines the changes from one person to another that I was going through – “Transmutation” was succinct; in my visualizing of what it was I had to do. In that the cross-fading of tracks by a DJ, was a perfect example of what had to be achieved in the smoothest possible way, while keeping the groove, so to speak. Firstly, I had to get beyond my past, so I could see where I was heading. Then I had to give a value to the person who I used to be, and not completely demonize that character, so I could call upon those experiences in a way which I use to darken my work, and then after recognizing the persona, I would have to change them, or move from one to the other. Yes, change into the person who I wished to be, but still have on call the experience of who I once was. Transmutation made this possible. In the end, instead of relying on the old persona as source of experience, the Mutation process I underwent left the mark I cannot forget, that being “change” (process), its dark lonely times is the emotive pool I dive into from time to time when I need to douse myself and intently the words, story and work in those darkening moods.

I also worked as DJ, for a while, in my younger days.

Other concepts I found complimentary to etfiction, were Astral Projection and its inducement through self hypnosis. And also, Active Sensoring: quieting the environment around you, from being inside the environment, from having actively listened to it, and then understanding it, and since you are actually a part of the environment now, you are not aware of its obliqueness anymore.

Heather: Is Psychosis a part of this seemingly eloborate act? According to Afamasaga it could have looked that way.

Afamasaga: There were times in my Transmutation where I was very disoriented, when I was disillousioned. Obviously the gouging of deep seated emotional systs, their excavation and airing, which was done quite violently in John Lazoo, could seem to be psychotic, but because the ID, and by now the EGO were pretty much in agreeance, of what we were up to, I knew we were of our own mind. But also, the Mutation I mentioned, personally for me, was a gouging; it’s not some teddy bear’s picnic, you know? A woman once told me that I was a brave man, not in a macho way, but in the way I face up to issues, deep, from when one was young.

Heather: Who was the woman?

Afamasaga: Lotte.

Heather: What’s the plan from here?

Afamasaga: Get a publishing contract, get married, and finish the ten books.

Heather: Sounds like a good plan.

Book Review – What Makes "5 Bucks a Day, Jr" Different?

Published: Saturday, October 15th, 2011 | Posted in Free Books

Struggling with information overload is common in the world of the Internet. That was certainly true for me so finding Dennis Becker’s e-book “5 Bucks a Day” was a godsend. This is Dennis’ own story explaining how he stopped focusing on making it big in one day. He shares how a changed approach can create a healthy income.

You may be wondering what the difference is between “5 Bucks a Day” and “5 Bucks a Day, Jr.” Well, not a lot really, but read on…

“5 Bucks a Day, Jr.” is certainly not a lightweight version of Dennis Becker’s popular e-book. What does make it different is that the Jr. version is designed to make it more affordable to more people by excluding access to the forum and it has no bonuses. The good news is you can still join the new forum now called “Earn 1KaDay.”

Reading the Jr. version of “5 Bucks a Day” has helped me refocus again and I recommend that it is something to read as soon as you find yourself straying, because this e-book is designed to help you focus. Often we try a multitude of strategies and schemes, jumping from one latest marketing must-have tool to another. But focus is the key to success.

What you will find in “5 Bucks a Day, Jr.”:

  • Tips on eliminating monthly expenses — very helpful as we watch our pennies.
  • Online and offline ideas to help you generate your $5 a day. This has been updated quite a bit since the e-book first launched in 2006.
  • Actions steps to take.
  • Strategies for overcoming distractions.
  • A section on helpful resources and sites of interest.

Dennis shows how to overcome distractions and focus, really motivating you along the way. Not only does he show how to implement his strategies he gives us warnings on potential pitfalls. This e-book will make your imagination run wild and give you a sense of excitement as you realize that you can do it too.

While this is not a ‘how to’ manual for Internet Marketing Dennis Becker is sincere in his endeavor to help the reader understand the strategies and explains them with his personal experiences.

Simplicity of the content and the obvious sincerity of the writer makes “5 Bucks a Day, Jr.” a winner, written in an easy to understand style its one e-book that deserves space on your hard drive as you will refer to it again and again.

Erotica: Or How Kindle Made Reading Sexy Again
